Knife Crime.....the solution is simple.

by wisty8golf @ 2008-05-14 - 18:11:23

Why do politicians steer clear of making the simple decisions....currently regarding knife crime.
Make the penalty for anyone found to be carrying a knife, regardless of whether they use it or not, 5 years in jail( and a full 5 years) ,not cushy half time off for behaving oneself. There can only be two reasons for carrying a knife.....attack or defence. Either way someone will get hurt and as something like 15 London families this year are already in mourning for their teenage sons, this is a matter of some urgency.
Brown, Cameron,Clegg and Johnson.... put your heads together and do the sensible thing, or do you need to have them knocked together.

Would you make cricket bats illegal too? How about hockey sticks? Knitting needles? Hat-pins? Bricks?

You see where I'm heading. ALl of those things are just as deadly as a knife but banning them is ridiculous as school-children, nannies, hat-wearing ladies and builders would all become subject to prison sentences. Banning isn't the answer.

I disagree. A 'hoodie' would be ridiculed by his mates if he pulled out a knitting needle.
Although five years seems overly harsh, why would anybody be carrying a knife in the street.
The real problem is weak sentencing generally.
There seems to be no disincentive to committing crimes.

Comment to Seaside Man.
I might be wrong but I don't recall a black London teenager being killed by a knitting needle, a girls hockey stick,a cricket bat or a bricklayers trowel.
Get real...Its knives and guns that are the problem

You're lucky I saw your reply as you didn't reply to me but to your own post. You'll note that knife crime went up when guns were banned. Guess what will happen if knives are banned....

Labour must love people like you, in favour of banning everything. That's the way to sleepwalk towards a fascist state.

Banning things isn't the answer. Fixing society so people don't want weapons is the answer.

Surely there's no reason as wisty8 says, to carry a knife, unless it is with intent? Prison sentences seem to be viewed as a cheap way to live for a few months with all creature comforts rather than a punishment these days.
